Howdy Fourth Graders!

I’m looking forward to seeing your faces this afternoon. If we were together at school today, you would have Library with Mrs. Rivers. Check out her blog today to find a library activity to try.

Today is the last day of April, which is National Poetry Month. Many of you will work to revise, edit, and publish a poem during the next week or so. I’d like to find a way to celebrate and share them, even though we aren’t writing them in our classroom together.

Reminder:

  • Google Meet this afternoon at 2:00.
  • We will try doing an online Mad Libs activity, and will talk about inventors and inventions.

Welcome to Wednesday, Fourth Graders!

Would you wonder what it’s called when poets use the same letter or sound at the beginning of each word? Hint: look back at Monday’s activities.

Do any of you recognize this painting? We have a poster of it in our classroom, and it’s also from our virtual field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art yesterday. It’s called “View of Toledo” by an artist called El Greco. He painted it in Spain around 1599-1600. I first saw this painting in a book when I was in fourth grade, and I’ve always liked it.

If we were at school today, you would have PE with Coach Sadie. Check out her blog today to find some ways to get your body moving at home.

Reminders:

  • Google Meet TOMORROW at 2:00pm.
  • We’ll continue our virtual field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York today.

If we were at school today, you would have Music and Chorus. Check out Mrs. Renauld’s blog to try some Music activities at home.

There’s a new read-aloud video of A Wrinkle in Time in Classroom today. We’ll start paying more attention to the setting of the story–when and where it happens.

Today you’ll also have a virtual field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. I hope you enjoy starting to explore this ENORMOUS museum online.

Happy Friday, Fourth Graders!

I hope your week of remote learning has gone well so far. I know it probably looks different in each of your homes. By now I imagine that you have new routines and patterns at home. I still post the morning message to be published each morning at 8:30 because I imagine you rushing down the hall to come into our classroom at that time.

Today your writing assignment is to write me a letter or email. You can tell me anything you like, and I promise to write back. The assignment includes my mailing address. My email address is baker[at]leverettschool.org, or you can submit it through Google Classroom.

I miss you all, and look forward to hearing from you! I hope you find some fun this weekend!

Konichiwa Fourth Graders,

My backyard is putting on its fanciest party clothes these days. It’s wearing flowers in many colors and playing beautiful birdsongs.

You might be thinking, “what?!” I just described my backyard as a poet, using something called personification. It’s what poets do when they write about animals and objects as if they were humans. You’ll learn more about it in today’s writing activity.

This afternoon we have a Google Meet at 2:00. Here are topics we’ll chat about:

  • Check-in: how are you doing?
  • Birthday circles for Ari and Zeb
  • Questions about the school closure and anything else

See you soon!

Happy Earth Day, Fourth Graders!

Today is a chance to think about how we appreciate and care for our home planet. Cora and I plan to pick up trash while we go for a walk in our neighborhood today. Will you do anything special for Earth Day?

Today is also a day with some big news–that schools in Massachusetts will stay closed for the rest of the school year. Many other states have already made this decision. We’ll talk more about it during our next Google Meet, tomorrow afternoon at 2:00.

I look forward to seeing you tomorrow! Below are your printable activities for today. If you login to Google Classroom, you’ll find these as well as some online-only activities.

Ahoy ahoy, Fourth Graders!

I hope you had a restful long weekend. Can you believe we had snow and 60-degree weather all in one weekend?

Yesterday was Patriot’s Day, a holiday that is observed in Massachusetts to commemorate the battles of Lexington and Concord. You’ll learn more about those battles when you study the American Revolution in sixth grade.

All your assignments are available today in Google Classroom. The printable parts are also available below. If you’re having trouble printing things, please let Kate or I know!

Happy Friday, Fourth Graders!

Owl alert! This one is on a vase that was made more than 2,400 years ago in ancient Greece! Can you believe it’s lasted so long? When we aren’t social distancing, you could visit this one at the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut, about 2 hours from here.

News and Updates:

  • There will be no remote learning on Monday because it’s Patriot’s Day here in Massachusetts. Take a minute to explore this link and find out why we celebrate Patriot’s Day.
  • Our Google Meet schedule will be Monday and Thursday afternoons at 2:00. Monday’s will be cancelled and I hope to see many familiar faces on Thursday!

Today’s learning activities are posted below and in Google Classroom. I hope you find some fun over the three-day weekend.

G’day, Fourth Graders!

I found this picture of an owl carving from ancient Egypt yesterday. It was made around 2,400 years ago(!) and is now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Since many museums have virtual tours right now, maybe we could go on a scavenger hunt for owl images. What do you think?

This afternoon we’ll have our second Google Meet at 2:00. If you’re not sure how to access it, or are still having tech troubles, have an adult email Mr. Mwangi and I this morning. We’ll do our best to help you!

If you can, be ready to show or tell us about something you’ve been working on since school has been closed.

See you this afternoon!
